Stained glass construction is an important part of our process.

Stained glass construction can be a time consuming process. By paying attention to the fine details of this process, Denver Stained Glass is able to deliver a quality product that will live in your family or estate for generations.

If you look at any piece of stained glass, you’ll see that its beauty comes from the pattern of cut glass, with each and every single piece separated by a strip of what’s known as lead caming. This is where the term leaded glass comes from. (Copper can be used instead of lead, as in the famed Tiffany lamps.)

It is the lead caming that holds the entire stained glass panel together. What you might not realize is that in traditional stained glass construction, the type Denver Stained Glass uses for our custom windows – each little piece of glass is cut by hand as well. Those cuts have to be extremely accurate. Can you imagine what would happen to the window if each piece of glass was even 1/8 of an inch too big or too small? The finished panel would never be the right size, and would never fit correctly into the client’s window or door.

Now that you understand these facts, you can see why stained glass is both an art and a craft, why it requires specially trained and talented artisans to build, and why it has remained popular throughout the centuries. Honestly, can you imagine the time it takes to make a huge stained glass piece like the kind you might see in a cathedral? Can you imagine cutting each and every piece of glass by hand, assembling them according to a premade pattern, one by one? This is a major part of the cost of stained glass, so if you are on a tight budget, remember, when you are deciding upon a pattern — the more pieces, the higher the cost will be.

Stained glass construction is perhaps the most vital part of the entire process, even more so than the design factor. Because no matter how brilliant the design, if it is not constructed carefully and accurately . . . it simply won’t work.

At Denver Stained Glass, we have combined this age old hand-building method with modern materials and computer design. The CAD program ensures our pattern is precise. The modern materials allow us to ensure a product that will stand the test of time and look gorgeous throughout the years. And to take our stained glass construction one step further, we use special installation methods to ensure a solid, secure fit in your windows.
